A2 (Elementary) level conversations: (26) Cultural Traditions and Customs
Sophie: Hi Alex! How’s your day going?
Alex: Hi Sophie! It’s good, thanks. How about yours?
Sophie: Not bad. By the way, I was thinking about cultural traditions. Do your family have any distinctive traditions?
Alex: Oh, definitely! We have this tradition of making a special dish during festivals. It’s a recipe that’s been passed down for generations.
Sophie: That sounds wonderful! What’s the dish?
Alex: It’s a dessert called “Mochi.” We make it together as a family, and everyone has a specific role in the process.
Sophie: That’s amazing! In my family, we have a tradition of storytelling. During gatherings, the elders share folktales and anecdotes, passing down our cultural heritage.
Alex: I love that! Stories are such a rich part of any culture. Do you celebrate any unique festivals?
Sophie: Yes, we celebrate a festival called “Diwali.” It’s the festival of lights, and we decorate our homes with lamps and candles. There’s also a lot of delicious food involved!
Alex: Diwali sounds fantastic! In my culture, we celebrate Lunar New Year with dragon dances and exchanging red envelopes for good luck.
Sophie: That’s so interesting! I’ve always wanted to witness a Lunar New Year celebration. Do you have any customs related to daily life?
Alex: Well, we have a custom of showing great respect to elders. It’s common to bow when greeting them as a sign of reverence.
Sophie: Respect for elders is crucial in many cultures. In my family, we have a custom of expressing gratitude before meals, acknowledging the effort that went into preparing the food.
Alex: That’s a lovely practice. Expressing gratitude is a quality we could all benefit from. How about traditional clothing?
Sophie: During special occasions, we wear traditional garments called “Hanbok.” They’re vibrant and have a lot of symbolic meaning.
Alex: Hanbok sounds beautiful! In my culture, we have traditional dances during ceremonies, and the attire is very colorful and symbolic too.
Sophie: It’s fascinating how clothing can carry so much meaning. These cultural traditions really make life richer, don’t they?
Alex: Absolutely! They connect us to our roots and create a sense of belonging. Well, Sophie, it was great sharing these cultural aspects with you!
Sophie: You too, Alex! It’s always interesting to learn about different traditions. If you ever want to experience a Diwali celebration, you’re welcome to join us!
Alex: Thanks, Sophie! I’d love that. Let’s plan for it sometime.
